Standing Firm in Your Faith

In our ever changing world, Christians’ struggle to defend their faith in Jesus Christ is growing at record speed.  Sure, God is the most powerful and doesn’t need defending but one of our jobs as Christians is to believe and make our belief known.  There are millions of unbelievers in the world that either look at us like aliens or go a step further and want to hurt us because of our beliefs.  The closer our relationship is to God, the more we will be criticized, persecuted, and judged as Christians.

The best defense in any battle is to have protection and weapons to fight those against us.  The questions that Christians face from unbelievers leave many believers stumbling for the right answer.  When we are questioned about the existence of God we need to be prepared with the right answers as our weapon of defense.  1 Corinthians 16:13 says to “remain alert.  Keep standing firm in your faith.  Keep on being courageous and strong.”

One of the obstacles unbelievers have with Christianity is to believe in something they can’t see.  The truth is that it is hard to believe in something bigger and more powerful than ourselves.  Simply put, we have a choice to believe or not believe.  As Christians, we are the light in the darkness of the world.  People can only see the light if the Holy Spirit opens their eyes, expels the darkness, regenerates their hearts, and makes them alive to the light of Jesus Christ.  Our job is not to convert unbelievers into Christians.  It is simply to be the light and show them the path that they could be on as a believer.  When we are questioned on the existence of God, what can we say?

First of all, does nothing come from nothing?  Nothing lacks reality because the universe, humanity’s existence, and the ability to reason all depend on the fact that life did not and could not come from nothing.  Life requires a reasonable origin and neither time or chance is a pre-cosmic phenomenon.

We can also observe the perfect order of Creation, from the balance of nature, the orbit of the planets, and to the mathematics of natural forces.  God is a God of order, not chaos.  With that, any God of order can be known and understood.

Scripture says in Romans 1:18 that the wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them.  For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – his eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

Another truth is that we all have a conscience.  The fact that there is good and evil, as stated hundreds of times throughout the Bible, is evident that there is morality and there must be a giver of morality, God.  We see the evidence every day with people.  The fact that we have a conscience and know the difference between right and wrong testifies to the existence of God.

If the sun and moon are evident and can be plainly seen, no one needs to be taught of their existence.  The existence of God as our Creator is evident and plain to see because His existence is self-evident to our conscience.  We know He exists because we have knowledge of Him in us.  He has set eternity in our hearts.

We can see God in the creation of man and how the world was designed for man.  Beginning with the atmosphere and the food supply to the dominion of man over all creatures.  The perfect cycle of life and death is also evident in a Creator.  We are born in such a beautiful way and live a life with miracles all around us.  As the Bible tells us though, the world is wearing out and men eventually die, and this is evident is our history and studies of the world with science.

Our hearts are restless until we find our rest in Him.  It is not our job to force faith in Jesus into people’s hearts but it is our job to know the truth and to know scripture and to stand firm in our faith.

John 1:3 – Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.  In him was life, and that life was the light of men.  The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

John 14:6 – I am the way and the truth and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me.

Psalm 14:1 – The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.”  They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good.

Hebrews 11:6 – And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

We face a problem in today’s world.  The notion of right and wrong is being discarded by large parts of society.  We see Christians fighting for their values and their faith and being challenged on what is considered right.  Believers are being challenged by Atheists who say God does not exist.  The real problem with their argument is that if they think God doesn’t exist, then everything is permitted.  Without God, “anything goes” and there is less distinction between good and evil or right and wrong.  So, we are standing firm for more than just God, but also for everything he stands for.  We see daily battles with abortion being legal, drugs becoming legal, same-sex marriages, gender changes, and so much more.  As Christians, we need to speak out and stand strong in our beliefs and values and what the Bible constitutes as right and true.  Don’t back down to society and modern times.  Just because times change and the world advances, God doesn’t change.  Stay true to God and His word.
